Each capsule contains: L-Phenylalanine 300 mg., Vitamin C 100 mg.,
Vitamin B6 25 mg. and Pantothenic Acid (B-5) 50 mg.

Drugs that can reduce appetite exist, though most (phenylpropanolamine, amphetamine, Ritalin, fenfluramine) are stimulants that are effective for only a few weeks and often have undesirable behavioral side effects. Phenylalanine, an essential nutrient amino acid, can inhibit appetite by increasing the brain’s production of the neurotransmitter NE (norepinephrine). Phenylalanine also causes the brain to release the hormone CCK (cholecystokinin), which has been shown to inhibit eating in experimental animals. Amphetamine works by causing the brain to release NE from its stores and by blocking its recycling. But, unlike amphetamine, L-phenylalanine does not cause a depressive crash when the patient stops taking it. That’s because L-phenylalanine causes the brain to increase both its production and its stores of NE, rather than depleting the stores as amphetamine does. Dr. James G. Gibbs, Jr., ofCornellUniversityhas used L-phenylalanine successfully in rhesus monkeys to reduce their eating. (The L-phenylalanine seems to be more effective in weight loss than D-phenylalanine).

L-phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that turns into a neurotransmitter in the brain, a chemical transmitter between the nerve cells and the brain. These neurotransmitters provide feelings of joy, ambition, alertness, sexual interest and can reduce hunger. Phenylalanine has been used in cases of depression, replacing antidepressants very successfully.

L-phenylalanine should be distinguished from sympathomimetic amine class of obesity drugs.

These anorectic agents cause the brain to use up its stores of NE, without stimulating it to produce more. After your supply of NE runs out (after two weeks or so), you feel let down, and very probably you will go on a rebound eating binge when you stop taking the pills. Since L-phenylalanine does not deplete the supply of NE (in fact, the brain uses it to make more), you doni have the letdown and rebound-eating binge problem.

Diucaps is most effective when taken before bed time because it takes several hours for the L-phenylalanine to be converted to NE by the brain. Vitamins C and B-6 are required for this conversion and are included in this formula. Since the NE is stored in the brain for a few days, there will be a lag of a few days between dose changes and full response to the dose change.

Vitamin C and B-6 are required for the conversion of phenylalanine to norepinephrine (NE) by the brain. Vitamin C maintains the protein collagen, gives strength to blood vessels and it is an antioxidant.
